The Golden Globes, the Emmys, and the Oscars are, inevitably, always referred to as the prom for Hollywood’s elite, at least once a recap. This year’s 2011 Golden Globes, held this past weekend, were no exception. And it is arguably like a prom, in a very general dress up and smile for the cameras sense, with one or two major exceptions, most importantly; no one at a high school prom ever sported this much bling.
The stars, out in full regalia, were wearing some of the latest diamond trends that are expected to sweep the public in 2011, from color, to metal, to style.
Kelly Macdonald, best known for her role on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” for example, was photographed wearing Rose gold earrings and an Ashoka diamond ring, a diamond cut that recently made headlines due to Reese Witherspoon’s new engagement ring. The Ashoka diamond style is a cut based on the famous diamond by the same name, once owned by the Buddhist warrior-emperor Ashoka Maurya. What makes it extra special though is that they are incredibly rare, due to the fact that only about 10 percent of all rough diamonds found a year are able to be cut in this way.
Television veteran Jennifer Love Hewitt was sporting a chocolate diamond and topaz ring, among other jewels, however it is the choice of colored diamonds that caught our eye. Although it is more Champagne diamonds that are predicted to make a splash this year, the family of browns have been becoming steadily more popular lately, even popping up on Kristen Bell’s finger when she became engaged in January of 2010.
Catherine Zeta Jones was not nominated for an award this year, but most likely had one of the best honors of the night when she got to accompany her husband Michael Douglas, who presented the last award of the night. Douglas has recently announced he is tumor free after is battle with throat cancer, and the couple was out to celebrate, and Zeta Jones was decked out in Platinum for the occasion.
The white colored precious metal has always been popular with the stars, but it has also made a comeback in the last year, due to the recent North American economic partial recovery. And with the amount of platinum seen on the red carpet, like Zeta Jones’s diamond and platinum earrings, bracelet, and diamond ring, it is no wonder experts predict platinum demand to continue to rise in the year to come.
So yes the Golden Globe Awards are normally all about the “who are you wearing” type of questions, but thanks to this year’s host Ricky Gervais the focus has been less about the looks and more about the words, but that doesn’t mean that the stars put in any less effort. And whether it was due to their stylist’s talent or their own intuition, the star certainly had their pulse on the fashion world’s latest trends this Sunday.
