Oval diamonds, while not as widely seen as its wildly popular Round cut cousin, seem to be making their way more publicly onto the scene. Not so surprising since the brilliance and light reflection from an Oval cut diamond is similar to that of a round, but also, like a Pear shaped diamond, it helps to elongate the appearance of a woman’s finger.
Most recently, when actor Eddie Cibrian proposed to singer LeAnn Rimes, he wanted to be sure that the new diamond engagement ring still had an antique feel to it. Working with the designer, a friend from childhood, Cibrian proposed with a unique custom designed ring. Rimes, who obviously said yes, has since been seen wearing the 5 carat Oval cut diamond, set onto a Rose gold band, with pave setting and a Fleur de Lis design incorporated on the band.
A similarly elaborate design that accommodates the elegance of an Oval diamond perfectly is the Venetian 5015R. Featuring a smaller Round cut diamonds on the outside of the shank and encircling the center, this ring is the perfect showcase for an Oval. Complete with a delicate lace detail inside the band, it could be a beautiful combination of vintage style and modern elegance, much like Cibrian had in mind for his new bride-to-be.
The most famous Oval engagement ring perhaps, is the one that Tom Cruise gave to Katie Holmes in June of 2005. Frequently photographed, her ring features a 5 carat Oval shaped diamond, set onto a platinum and rose gold shank, adorned with pave set diamonds. The movie star presented Holmes with the stunningly beautiful engagement ring in one of the world’s most romantic setting, the top of the Eiffel Tower, overlooking Paris. And for Holmes, who often looks mature beyond her years, the vintage style is perfect for her.
The Insignia 7034 engagement ring from Verragio is a less elaborate design than seen on the hands of many starlets like Holmes, but it is the perfect platform for an Oval diamond. The shank is adorned with small Round cut diamonds that flow up to the solitaire center, and without a halo or side stones, an Oval would be able to elongate the wearer’s finger and shine alone with its 56 facets.
While we don’t see oval shaped diamonds as often as we do Princess cuts, trends are very often influenced by those that came before us, and if that is any indication perhaps we can expect to see this well rounded diamond creeping farther and farther into the public stratosphere.
